That Space Game

Ever since playing Starflight as a kid, I have dreamed of creating an awesome space game.  I've made a few space-related games, but none that I'm especially proud of.  I also named my company Binary Galactic as a homage to Binary Systems, the maker of Starflight.

Every year I return to the idea of creating a space adventure like Starflight.  I was even part of the Starflight 3 and Starflight TLC teams for a brief period of time, doing some work on the map screen for Starflight 3, but ultimately I left those projects since I didn't agree with the direction they were taking.  Just today I visited the Starflight 3 forum and noticed that people are talking about getting development going again on that game.  I wish them the best of luck.

As for me, I want to capture that excitement I had growing up as a kid of exploring an unknown and dangerous galaxy, communicating with alien species, and commanding a powerful starship.  I have dozens of names and dozens of different ideas of how this game would look and feel.  Some of them closely mirror the original Starflight, while others are drastically different, even cartoony (think Futurama).  However, all of my ideas are ultimately similar to Starflight.  My most recent idea has been to create this space game for the Raspberry Pi and potentially sell the game on SD cards that people can plug and play (it would boot into a custom Linux or FreeBSD desktop that takes you straight into the game).

I've also had some recent inspiration from building Benny's spaceship from the Lego Movie: :D

I've had a long hiatus, and now it's time to get back to it and finally make that space game that I'm proud of.

Wish me luck, and I'll keep you posted.
